The Town of Hartwick is seeking members to fill seats for the Board of Assessment Review (BAR). The BAR hears grievances of property owners regarding their property assessments. Training will be provided on May 2nd. Applicants MUST be a resident of Hartwick and available for Training Day (5/2/25) and Grievance Day which will be held on May 27th. This is a paid position. The Board of Assessment Review (BAR) Member is responsible for reviewing and adjudicating property tax assessment grievances filed by property owners. This role involves evaluating evidence, conducting hearings, and ensuring fair property assessments in accordance with local tax laws. Members must analyze real estate data, legal documents, and testimonies to determine the validity of assessment appeals. Key responsibilities include attending scheduled hearings, deliberating on cases, and rendering impartial decisions based on presented facts and applicable regulations. Strong analytical, decision-making, and communication skills are essential. Prior knowledge of real estate valuation, property assessment, or municipal taxation is beneficial but not mandatory. BAR Members are appointed for a fixed term and must act with integrity, fairness, and impartiality. This position requires a commitment to attending hearings and upholding the principles of due process to ensure equitable tax assessments within the community.
